Ingredients of Kuri Kinton (Chestnut and Sweet Potato Kinton)
- It’s 1 of middle sized sweet potato (about 250g without skin).
- It’s 1 pack of candied chestnuts (kuri no kanro-ni, mine was 160g).
- Prepare 1-1.5 Tbsp of syrup of the candied chestnuts.
There are a lot of kinds of dishes for Osechi Ryori, and Kuri Kinton is one of the most popular dishes for kids as it is sweet like a dessert. The characters for kinton literally mean 'group of gold', so with the golden color of this sweet, it represents a wish for wealth and financial success. Mashed Japanese yam with chestnuts called "Kuri Kinton" (栗きんとん) is my absolute favorite osechi, and I don't think I've ever missed eating it on New Year's Day. "Kuri" means chestnut. The meaning of "kinton" is too complicated to explain in a couple of sentences. Kuri kinton is a sweeter osechi ryori dish, made by combining mashed satsuma imo (Japanese sweet potatoes) with candied chestnuts. Once made, the dish has a distinct golden yellow colour, which symbolises wealth, prosperity, and good luck.
